Jesus in the Temple
Installed: 1905
Memorial name: Knowles Memorial Window
Dedicated to: Henry Miles Knowles (1850-1903)
Donor: Alice Leslie Appleton Knowles (wife)
Location: Main floor, right side
This window provides another unique interpretation of a well-known story from the life of Jesus. In traditional accounts of young Jesus visiting the temple (Luke 2:41-52), he is portrayed as a boy among the temple’s elders and his mother is not featured. This depiction shows a parent reuniting with a lost child, evoking an emotional scene on a human scale. Mary reaches out to her son as he descends the stairs. A menorah in the background and elaborately detailed curtains on either side of the staircase indicate the setting of the temple. Three doves hover over the scene. At the bottom of the floral border, the acanthus motif echoes the church’s Corinthian-style capitals.
This window is dedicated to Henry Miles Knowles (1850-1903) who was the founder of the Georgia Pacific Paper Company. It was donated by his wife, Alice Leslie Appleton (1854-1907) with whom he had four children.
